21.12.09: 日式豚肉飯 (Japanese pork belly on rice) - the recipe

Ingredients
  • pork belly: 3-4 slices per person. We got them pre-sliced from Japanese grocery store, alternatively, you can buy a slab of pork belly and DIY the slices.
  • mushroom of your choice: again, about 3-4 pieces per person
  • water: a small bowl
  • soy sauce, mirin: amount to your own liking (add in little by little will be the safest bet)
  • white onion, thinly sliced: a quarter of a medium size onion per person (don't be shy on the onion, trust me, the more the better!!!)
  • bonito flakes, sesame seeds: flexible, to your own liking
  • Japanese barbeque & mayonnaise: as much or as little as you like
Steps
  1. Pan fry the pork belly for a little while (you will be able to smell the aroma of the cooking pork belly).
  2. Add some water and soy sauce to the partially cooked pork.
  3. Let the pork cook, but don't over boil
  4. Add some mirin, bonito flakes and sesame seeds- these will give the dish a mixture of sweet, fishy and seedy taste.
  5. Add the sliced white onion- it's a must and gives the dish a real oniony taste.
  6. (optional) Add some mushroom of your choice, we used abalone mushroom (鮑魚菇)- the mushroom will soak up the sauce. You may choose other vegies if you don't like mushroom.
  7. Put rice into bowls, and top up with the pork, onion and mushroom. Squeeze some Japanese barbeque sauce on top plus a dab of Japanese mayo. Add more bonito flakes on top to decorate.
Tip: Don't pour in the left over sauce from the cooking of the pork- it's full of pork belly fat, and it will also make the rice dish overly watery.

豆乳 shabu shabu

After having this delicious 豆乳 shabu shabu in Japan, we decided to try it out at home tonight.

It's pretty simple, you just need (1) unsweetened soya milk; (2) meat of your choice (get those thinly sliced beef, pork or chicken from Chinese / Korean / Japanese grocery shop); vegies (tonight we had 金菇菜, cabbage is another nice choice); and (4) udon or japanese ramen.

The soup base- just pour in the soya milk, and add some meat of your choice- tonight we put in some left over chicken and pork balls. We also added some tofu. Let it boil (on low heat) for a little while to get the flavour of the meat into the soup.

Once that's done, you are ready to shabu shabu. Pour some sesame sauce (which you can easily get from Japanese grocery shop) into your bowl, and use that as a dip for the meat and vegies that have been cooked in the soya milk.

At the end of the meal, save some room to have a bit of the soup- it's smooth and super rich in flavour. Awesome stuff!

Ideally we should have a hotpot stove so we can eat at our table... but until we get one, the stove will need to be it for the time being.

Photos from our Japan trip - October 2009

Finally  got around to collecting my favourites from the trip. Overall, we enjoyed our time at Hokkaido the most, because there were just tonnes of fresh and delicious sashimi.

Osaka- we think it was OK, but probably once is enough. The city is a bit too busy to our liking, and shopping wise- I still prefer Hong Kong's... particularly given my lack of knowledge of the Japanese language...

Kyoto was great... fascinating to see the different shrines... but again (for hubby and I), once we've seen 1 or 2, the rest are pretty much the same.

Our best memory of Kyoto is probably our stay at the Westin Hotel... Ooo.... we luvv their Heavenly Bed, they are SUPER COMFIE and totally live up to its name. The hotel do sell the mattress, ensemble and manchester etc... from the Australian price list, just the ensemble will cost you $3,500.... and if you get matching pillow, sheets, doona etc, add another $1,000 to that. I personally think it's worth the bucks, cos the mattress is just divine (and once you get the mattress, you might as well go the full length with the matching accessories)...

Too bad our mattress is brand new, and will have at least another 10 years of life, if not more.....

The "Marriage Contract"...

Came across this article on SMH today...

Magwatch|Emily Dunn

I can understand having a pre-nuptial agreement to set out what happens when a marriage breaks down (especially for the rich and famous, where there are a lot at stake)... but to have it drawn up to stipulate the commercial / financial consequences for things that happen during a marriage... this is just outrageously ridiculous.

Seems sad that for some people, marriage is just another commercial transaction...

Weekend Getaway

Went to the Gold Coast & Brisbane on the weekend for a relatives wedding. Stayed at the Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove and worth a mention is the dinner at The Fireplace- choose from their menu and create your own 2 course dinner for just $59 (including coffee & tea), what a bargain for a restaurant at Hyatt. The food was really good and even hubby gave their woodfire wagyu steak a thumb up.

Entree: scallop on crispy pork belly

Main: woodfire wagyu with potatoes and salad

(yeah was so dark in the restaurant, best I can do with my phone camera)

On Sunday morning, hubby and I walked by the lake at the hotel and took these amazing photos...

The wedding on Sunday was at the chapel at the hotel... It has an AMAZING view... and the fact that the whole chapel is pretty much made of glass, when you sit inside, it feel as though you are in a chapel on water, how awesome!

The view from where I sat:

I've heard the Pachelbel's Canon in D in string quartet many times, and to hear the same tune on this beautiful harp... wow it was good, gives this common wedding song a new sound to me ears.

10 October 2009- dinner with the gals

Had the girlfriends over on Satuday and made them the Lamb Moussaka & Nicoise Salad with Salmon.

All the ingredients:

The moussaka before being assembled (quite a bit of effort to get that far, took about 3 hours of prep, most probably because I'm very slow with the chopping and the eggplant frying also takes a bit of time... Of cos photo taking also took up some time... Hahaa...):

While waiting for the mossaka to bake (with the help of my girlfriends, we pulled this sald together- thanks to hubby for frying the salmon for us):

The baked moussaka:

Our meal:

I was a bit nervous about the bechamel sauce cos it was quite thick... Despite this, once baked the moussake turned out just right. The meal was satisfactory, as we had cleared all the food at the end of dinner.

Will need to start practising other dishes for next dinner party, hopefully around Christmas time.

Emma & Tom's juice

Wanted to have a nice juice after lunch today and saw this interesting blend- orange, mango, passionfruit, banana, pineapple and ginseng... Was looking forward to taste the ginseng, but was hugely disappointed .... I couldn't taste any trace of ginseng... But I've to say the rest of the blend was good, tasted very fresh, as if squeezed fresh. Might try the carrot and ginger one next time.

Shopping spree on a windy Saturday

While I had all good intention of cleaning the house (thanks to Mr Duststorm...), this morning we got up and found it's another windy day... So what better thing to do than to go shopping!!

First, we got PP a new dining bowl, cos she pulled her current ceramic one off the shelve the other day and gave it some cracks... So time for a new one. Also we've been looking for a collar with bell for her, cos hubby said just as I have a charm bracelet with bell, so should PP... Let's see if PP likes her new collar.

Then hubby- he's had his eyes on a new fishing rod; especially with summer just around the corner; there will many hot nights where he will be able to fish... After like 20 minutes of thinking, he bought this 7.4ft fishing rod... Hope he can catch some nice fishies with it... Ummm yum!!

Me- haha I only had 1 thing in mind, which is this pair of ridiculously high peep toe pump... Saw it in the city on Thurs and it was love at first sight... But when I finally decided to buy it yesterday the shop had just the display pair, plus another new pair but with minor defect to one of the shoe... The sale guy offered to knock $15 off either one of the pair... And I thought, o well probably not meant to be and walked away from it...

Today hubby agreed to take me to the Chatswood store to see if they have a good pair. HAHAHAHAHA they had a new pair and with no defects!!!! What's even better is when I paid for it, the system had the shoes for $20 less than the tagged price.... Hohoho!!!

Maxim's Moon Cakes (Sydney version)

It’s moon festival next Saturday, and I went and bought some “bing” “pay” (snowy / iced) moon cake today. There’s not much choice in Sydney… so I just went with a safe choice… something I’ve had before- Maxim’s.

The moon cakes came in a variety of box sizes- double pack, rectangular boxed, square boxed and round boxed. I chose the ones in the round tin, cos it’s the largest box of them all, and the yellow circular tin looks like the moon, so is well suited for moon festival.

I had a brief glance at the bottom of the tin, and saw the usual flavours (Sago Cream with Mango & Pomelo; Mango; Sesame; Pineapple; Green Tea with Macadamia Nuts; Chestnut; Green Tea with Red Bean and Yam; and Strawberry).

When I got back to the office, out of curiosity, I looked up the HK Maxim’s site to see if they sell the same stuffs in HK….

And obviously not!!! The HK version of the round tin has:
  • Rocky Road;
  • Custard;
  • Tiramisu;
  • Strawberry;
  • Sago Cream with Mango and Pomelo;
  • Mango;
  • Green Bean Paste; and
  • BIRDS NEST…
OK I can understand not including the birds nest moon cake because of importation rules… but what about the missing Rocky Road, Custard and Tiramisu flavours? Where have they gone?!

*****
Postscript:-

Have just pre-celebrated moon festivals with my in-laws, and have ate the largest moon cake in the box, which is the Sago Cream with Mango and Pomelo... it's good, not too sweet at all, especially when compared to the traditional ones... YUM~~!!!

Sydney Dust Storm 23.09.2009

When I woke up to the bright orange sky this morning, my first sleepy thought was.... "umm, bushfire?" but as there's no heat, I figured it must be something else... but at 6am in the morning... what better thing to do than to go back to bed....

When we finally woke up and got ready to leave for work, yes I did notice that our white ceramic tiled floor has kinda turned to this brownish red... and I thought, "O... PP- what have you been up to in the garden? playing with the soil with your wet hands & feet..."

It's not only when we got into the car and turned on the radio that we realised this is a dust storm...

Some mundane aftermath of this dust storm on our household:-

  • loads and loads of dust came through into our house via PP's doggie door.... which meant we spent some time tonight to mop the floor... and have only gotten rid of the first layer of dust... still will need to use bleach on the weekend, as well as wiping the kitchen, table, chairs etc... (ARGH!!!)
  • I had to wash my face with cleansing oil, soap and milk (yes altogether, 3 times) before I feel clean enough to go on with my other cleansing routine...
  • PP's turned from a white / dirty grey dog, into this partially light rusty brown coloured dog... it's as if she's got her hair dyed... she needs to be cleaned...
  • cos PP still insists on sleeping on our bed... man, our bed sheets etc all need to be washed...

Luxurious Tahiti resort- Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa

When researching for our last Christmas holiday one of the places I really wanted to go was Tahiti... it's such a romantic place (last Christmas, we ended up in Vanuatu and also had a really good time, best of all was doing our PADI open water course).

Today read about the Hilton Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa renovation to their already gorgeous overwater bungalow. The bungalow will become double storey villas, with 2 bedrooms, a living room, PRIVATE POOL (wow wow!!!!!), spa, gazebo and deck. Price? Just over AU$5k a night, with breakfast and dinner included...

Another thing I must do when I win the big lotto jackpot....

Median House Prices in Australia

Latest property price data from RP Data. One interesting point that the SMH mentioned is that the median house price in Western Australia's seaside town of Cottesloe tops the chart over Sydney’s beautiful Mosman…

My colleague was in Perth earlier this year, and told us all how pretty it is in Perth… maybe I can plan an interstate holiday to WA and see for it myself.
